Grassland Use on Organic Sites in Brandenburg, Germany (2018 - 2021)

Implementation of individually optimized grassland use on organic sites (BOGOS)

The focus of the ELER project is the individually coordinated, optimized use of grassland on organic wet sites. Alternative paths should be found through synergy effects between science and practice. The Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development (HNEE), Department of Landscape Use and Nature Conservation, works in partnership with four farms spread across Brandenburg and located in various large protected areas.

Grassland management in Brandenburg, which is strongly linked to fen sites, is facing increasing management problems. Accompanied by extreme weather conditions such as very hot and dry summers as well as increasing soil degradation with subsidence and the formation of dam layers, the quality of forage and the yield on the land are constantly decreasing. Furthermore, the soil subsidence and the associated micro-relief of the terrain lead to increased problems with the accessibility of the areas with conventional agricultural technology.

In order to develop an economical, but also climate-neutral, soil-friendly and nature conservation-acceptable use of these valuable locations for the future, alternative usage options are being developed with managers and land owners.

In order to make targeted decisions, the individual farm structures of the respective cooperation companies are analyzed, location surveys of the current vegetation, soil and water conditions are used as a basis and, above all, the exclusion criteria and wishes of the farmers are taken into account.

Another project goal is to network relevant actors and interested parties. For this purpose, an interactive internet platform will be set up and networking meetings will be organized. The biosphere reserve administrations, among others, should act as multipliers.
