International Workshop:

Research in European UNESCO Biosphere Reserves

13th February - 16th February 2024

Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development, City Campus

Schicklerstraße 5, 16225 Eberswalde, Germany

The main goal of the workshop is to advance the implementation of the recommendations of the Eberswalde Declaration and the Lima Action Plan for research in biosphere reserves. This event is also part of a series of workshops supported by the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN), since 2020. The workshops aim to link European Biosphere Reserves practitioners and facilitate the exchange of best practices. The current workshop is, therefore, designed to promote an active exchange between managers and staff responsible for research and monitoring in different European biosphere reserves. Discussions on research progress, gaps, needs, collaboration with research managers and staff from diverse biosphere reserves are also expected.

About

UNESCO Biosphere Reserves are unique places for innovative sustainability research and partnerships. According to the Lima Action Plan, biosphere reserves can play a significant role in sustainability research, e.g., by serving as living labs to understand and monitor social-environmental changes, by providing infrastructure to the development of research activities, by collaborating with research institutions in the development of projects, and by undertaking research to inform their own management plans.

In 2022, the Biosphere Reserves Institute of the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development organized the International Conference on “Science and Research in, for and with UNESCO Biosphere Reserves”. In this conference, more than 100 participants from 46 countries jointly developed the “Eberswalde Declaration” a proposal to strengthen science, Indigenous and other knowledge systems, as well as research in, for, and with UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. In 2022, the Eberswalde Declaration was presented to and endorsed by the International Coordinating Council of the UNESCO “Man and the Biosphere” (MAB) Programme. The declaration includes recommendations for research in individual biosphere reserves addressing data accessibility, communication and publication of results, definition of research needs, and establishment of collaborations with researchers and other local actors.
